Make it small

I am reading Switch at the moment. It is another fantastic book on change.

One aspect that I wanted to write about today was the section of the book that talks about shrinking the change. This section, to me, was incredibly powerful.

We are often told when a goal is so large it becomes overwhelming and that we should break it down into smaller, more achievable parts. Well it is the same for a large change.

It got me thinking about changes which are unpleasant but really need to be done, I took one of those changes and applied the concept of ‘shrinking the change’. I broke the change down into ridiculously small chunks – tiny, tiny chunks which I could do easily everyday…and a change that was seeming insurmountable is now being achieved. I felt so silly doing it at first as they were really small chunks – but it works!

Try it for yourself – take that one change that you know you need to make and chunk it down, down, down to its finite parts – then execute your plan…you will be amazed.

A big thank you to the Being Human group who gifted me with my copy of Switch – How to change things when change is hard.
